The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, with counterparts from the Departments of Public Works and Infrastructure, MEC Martin Meyer; and Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs,MEC Musa Zondi, respectively, to have eleven commercial farms transferred to DARD.
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has conducted assessments of commercial farms suitable for agricultural use and economic development. In accordance with the MoU, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will repurpose underutilised farms for rural and economic development, benefiting provincial farmers.
Speaking at the MoU signing, kaMadlopha-Mthethwa shared her Department's need to have land released for the benefit of farmers, "Addressing food insecurity requires a collective effort, starting with ensuring access to land. This will contribute to improving the fortunes of the 19.8 percent of people experiencing food insecurity in KwaZulu-Natal, as per the General Household Survey, and will bring about development resulting in food production for many families struggling to make ends meet. We view the MoU as part of our efforts to reduce the risks of food insecurity and poverty.
