MEC encourages uMkhanyakude Communities to adopt agriculture to improve their livelihoods

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has urged communities to adopt agriculture as a means of improving their lives. She was speaking at eMachobeni Royal Palace, iNgwavuma, under Jozini Local Municipality, on the 23rd of August 2025. The programme was organised by the Spousal Office of the Amazulu Royal Family – Her Royal Highness Queen Nomzamo Myeni-Zulu.

In her capacity as the MEC Champion of uMkhanyakude District Municipality and as a local resident, kaMadlopha-Mthethwa said that the uMkhanyakude area has a vast amount of arable land that needs to be utilised profitably. She has told the gathering that the District has the potential to be the breadbasket of the Province, adding that if most households are involved in agricultural activities, severe food insecurity will be addressed.

kaMadlopha-Mthethwa also sensitised the gathering, comprising locals and clergy, to formalise their garden operations. She said that her Department offers a wide range of opportunities for communities to tap into, including crops, indigenous chickens, goats and beef production. "Applications for project funding have commenced; take advantage of the Extension Officers situated in our offices around local Wards; they will assist you with your applications. We also have area managers stationed around towns and cities who are ready to help you."

kaMadlopha-Mthethwa has also urged the public to pray for unity for the Amazulu nation led by His Majesty Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
