AFTER A DECADE OF FRUSTRATION, AGRICULTURE MEC FINALLY BRINGS ABATTOIR SERVICES CLOSER TO RURAL FARMERS

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa has officially received the technical report on Thursday, 15 October 2026, of the revitalized Bhambanana Abattoir in Jozini, ending years of hardship for communal farmers. The MEC said reviving the facility, which failed to operate for years due to Veterinary Public Health non-compliance, was a direct mandate from Premier Thami Ntuli when she assumed office in June 2024.

"This was a promise I had to fulfil," saying that when she was appointed to lead the Department, she was given three clear instructions: to provide dipping chemicals to farmers, to intensify household food security campaigns through mechanization and to revive the Bhambanana abattoir infrastructure. MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa also thanked HOD Dr Fikile Qwabe, Agribusiness Development Agency leadership, local municipal councils and traditional leadership.

Rehabilitated at R16.95m by ECA Consulting since January 2026, the abattoir will process 20 cattle per day (50 at expansion) and 100 small stocks.

The objectives of the handover are to officially introduce the completed infrastructure to stakeholders.

"We have farmer training underway to ensure their cattle meet the required standards to be slaughtered at this facility. We will also help with the establishment of local feedlots for weaner calves before they are taken for slaughter. I am happy that this project has already brought jobs for our local people," said MEC.

The handover supports KZN's FMD fight, with over 1.8 cattle vaccinated to date and 500 000 ear tagged. MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa urged communities to protect the facility as a public asset to boost rural economy and market access for communal farmers.

An official launch of the facility will take place early next year after an operator has been appointed.
