The KwaZulu-Natal Youth Day Commemoration for the Soweto Uprisings that took place in 1976 was marked with a colourful parade, including speeches and posters carried by youth formations such as schools and traditional dancers, bearing the messages 'Nation building and youth empowerment'. The event, started with a vibrant parade from Grayville Racecourse to the Durban University of Technology's Steve Biko Campus on Tuesday 16 June 2026.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa was part of the proceedings.
During the commemoration, MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa said, "The Department is still very much geared toward empowering the next generation of farmers and has dedicated the year 2026 to unlocking the potential of young people to drive change in the agricultural value chain.
