The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, together with the National Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, Hon. Nokuzola Capa, conducted a site inspection of banana farms in Port Shepstone to assess challenges and explore interventions aimed at enhancing banana production in the Province on 26 September 2025.
During the inspection, MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised the importance of implementing proactive measures to curb the spread of diseases threatening banana production. She further highlighted the pivotal role played by producers in safeguarding the agricultural sector and ensuring sustainable growth.
“Banana production is a key contributor to both food security and the rural economy. By working hand in hand with farmers, the Department is committed to providing the necessary support to ensure their success. Together, our collective efforts will build resilience and unlock new opportunities for growth within the industry,” said MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa.
Deputy Minister Nokuzola Capa echoed these sentiments, reiterating the Department’s commitment to working closely with farmers to promote sustainable practices, strengthen biosecurity measures and protect the future of the banana industry in KZN.
