The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Super Zuma, led a Food Security and Poverty Alleviation Campaign in Ward 11, Hlathikhulu, under uThukela District on 07th December 2023.
The campaign seeks to intensify the efforts of the Department to eradicate poverty and enable food security through the One Home, One Garden programme
MEC Super Zuma visited five (5) household gardens in the area. A youth-owned project that is enthusiastic about agriculture is one that caught the MEC's attention.
This project has a clear vision of enhancing production capacity by establishing a complete value chain in crop production, which has effectively tapped into the market as it is already supplying Boxer and other retail stores.
MEC Zuma expressed appreciation for the fact that young people are beginning to shed negative perceptions they may have had about agriculture and are seizing and pioneering opportunities presented to them by the Department. He also expressed his delight at seeing young people band together in the fight against poverty.
"We need young people who are energized, focused and passionate about agriculture in the agricultural sector to help the nation alleviate poverty and promote food security in the province.
I am impressed that youth in this area are dedicated to agriculture, as we all know that job opportunities are scarce nowadays," Zuma said.
Hon. MEC Zuma further convened a farmer engagement at the Abambo Tribal Community Hall. This engagement intends to bring together all farmers within the area, stakeholders and interested developments of Hlathikhulu involved in all farming aspects to find solutions to problems plaguing the agricultural sector.
