Farming turns a new leaf for the community of Mjindini, uThukela District
“While delivering my median budget vote earlier this year I announced that as a Department, we have programmes in place which are aimed at improving the genetics of livestock in rural areas." said MEC Super Zuma.
Zuma made the remarks while addressing residents of Ward 29 in uMhlumayo, Alfred Duma Local Municipality on 27 June 2023. This was the second engagement following a stakeholder engagement that took place on 08-09 June 2023.
Hon. MEC Super Zuma officially handed over the uMjindini Dam, which is one of 04 dams to be scooped using the Yellow Plants from the Department. The MEC further handed over for the first time, 06 top pedigree Bonsmara bulls to the local livestock association. This is in a quest to improve the quality and state of livestock by local farmers at livestock auctions.
"As we commemorate the Youth Month, I urge our young people to participate in agricultural activities whether it's crop production or livestock farming. If properly nurtured, communal livestock have the potential to contribute millions of Rands to the economy of KwaZulu-Natal and assist alleviate poverty, create employment and change the lives of our people," said MEC Super Zuma.
"In my first visit, I visited 10 households which were part of the "One Home, One Garden" programme. I am overwhelmed with the recent reports of more than 100 participating households and more enquiring to be part of the programme. The uMjindini dam will allow residents to have access to water for irrigation and livestock for consumption.
