KZN Agriculture MEC responds to lightning which wreaked havoc in the agricultural sector in Kokstad

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, visited the area of Kokstad after 22 cattle were struck by lightning at the weekend.

The assessment included coming up with preventative measures to mitigate the effects of such disasters in the future.

More than eight communities were affected, including the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Research Station. Part of the visit included the monitoring of affected farmers and those that were left destitute by the tragic ordeal.

MEC Sithole-Moloi has expressed deep concern about the climate change impact on the communities. This follows recent floods that engulfed the midlands, leaving many communities destitute and affecting farm production.

“I would like to urge residents to exercise extreme caution and to follow weather reports so that they can stay updated on the conditions in the area,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi.
