Rabies Vaccination Drive in Chatsworth

Recently, there has been a spike in Rabies cases in the areas of Umlazi, Chatsworth and Mobeni north of Durban.

In a quest to eliminate the scourge of Rabies in these hotspots, the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Super Zuma, undertook a vaccination drive of dogs and cats in Welbedacht, Chatsworth under eThekwini Metro. This was done to raise awareness and prevent the scourge of rabies in the province.

As part of a Private-Public Partnership to combat the resurgence of rabies, the Department has collaborated with two (2) non-governmental organizations and one (1) international donor for the provision of equipment and medical supplies.

MEC Zuma remarked during the vaccination drive in Chatsworth, "I am delighted to see pet owners cooperating with the Department as they bring in their pets for vaccinations." This demonstrates that they care for the lives of the people in the community” said Zuma.

The Department also intensified its spaying campaign in the area to control the population through sterilization, which will aid in Rabies disease control and animal welfare.

This free vaccination campaign also presented an opportunity for those pets that have other health issues and wounds, to be treated and attended to.
