The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, led by the Honourable Premier, Mr Thami Ntuli, hosted the Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) initiative within the eThekwini Metro on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, visited Ward 22 in Clermont to conduct oversight inspections aimed at assessing the progress of human settlement projects and ensuring that all work is being implemented efficiently and in accordance with the required standards.
The MEC’s delegation included representatives from several Government Departments. During the visit, it was reported that the Clermont community continues to face numerous social challenges, with Ward 22’s population estimated at approximately 30 000 residents. Key issues raised included substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and the operation of illegal liquor outlets running around the clock. The delegation also noted concerns related to undocumented foreign nationals, illegal electricity connections and leaking sewage infrastructure.
MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised the need for strengthened policing in the area to effectively address crime and highlighted the importance of proactive intervention by Departments such as Social Development and Community Safety to combat social ills.
Despite the high levels of crime and ongoing challenges, the MEC acknowledged progress made by Government, particularly through the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Notable achievements include the construction of approximately 750 houses for Clermont residents, with several already completed and occupied. The full project is expected to be finalised by 2027.
