MEC engages with Ndumakude community members during OSS

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Hon. Thami Ntuli, accompanied by Members of the Provincial Cabinet, visited uMzumbe Local Municipality in the Ugu District as part of Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS). The visit specifically focused on Ward 13, where Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Champion, Ms Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, engaged with the community to address challenges and identify solutions.

Hundreds of community members gathered at the Ndumakude Community Hall as part of the early briefing before visiting the Shinga Irrigation Scheme to hand over seeds and seedlings. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development provides constant support with production inputs and extension services. Additionally, it has previously installed 5 hectares of irrigation equipment to support the scheme.

OSS serves as a strategic platform for direct engagement between government leadership and communities, empowering communities to voice their concerns and guide government initiatives while receiving progress reports on service delivery matters. This includes inspections of effectiveness of services implemented by government and war-rooms.

Part of the challenges faced by locals of Ward 13 include 18 homes that require urgent government intervention, three schools experiencing high crime levels and elderly people without identification documents. Local Ward Councilor SG Doncabe also revealed that the war room only recently became fully operational. Other challenges include poor roads and bridges, as well as load reduction of electricity occurring four days a week.

MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa instructed officials responsible for the concerns raised to fast-track services and for officials and communities to attend the war rooms regularly in order to unlock their challenges. The Chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal House of Traditional and Khoi San Leaders Inkosi RS Shinga, who also presides over this area, echoed kaMadlopha-Mthethwa's words, stressing the importance of attending war rooms and calling on all officials not to miss such gatherings as it affects people's lives.
