The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, met with the Amajuba and uThukela District farmers in Newcastle, Ward 33, on Thursday, 22 May 2025 to discuss a range of pressing concerns affecting the agricultural community in the area.
This engagement underscores the Department's ongoing commitment to supporting and uplifting farmers in the Province. Furthermore, it seeks to create awareness of Departmental programmes and challenges faced by the farmers, particularly the lack of support, skills and farming resources.
Hon. MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa kicked off the proceedings by conducting Operation Siyahlola and a harvesting demonstration at the uSwangu Agric Project in the Dicks area.
This is a 100% youth-owned project that cultivates grains including soybeans, dry beans and white maize, supplying them to silos that manufacture animal feed throughout the province.
Siphiwe Mthwetha, a young vibrant farmer from Amajuba District was humbled by the Hon. MEC’s swift response following the request he made through the MEC’s office.
“I am very humbled and grateful to be a part of this engagement. It provided the platform for farmers to network and discuss challenges and possible solutions. Over the years, the Department has played a significant role in our growth through the provision of production inputs and farming implements; however, we still encounter challenges that need the Department’s intervention“ said Simphiwe.
MEC highlighted the importance of joint efforts between farmers and the Department in order to alleviate poverty and bridge the gap between emerging and commercial farmers.
“Our doors are open for all residents of KwaZulu-Natal who seek assistance or aspire to partake in Agricultural activities. Working together has the power to yield us optimum results and ensure we combat food insecurity and play a pivotal role in changing the lives of our people," said MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa.
The farmers expressed their gratitude for the MEC's visit, recognising it as a significant step towards enhancing the area's Agricultural prospects. Their remarks also appreciated the valuable work done by Extension Officers, who have played a critical role in giving guidance and support.
