In pursuit of our commitment to eradicate poverty and hunger through food security in KwaZulu-Natal, KZN DARD MEC Hon. Super Zuma, successfully led a stakeholder engagement in Ward 11 of Osizweni, under Amajuba District on Tuesday, 23 January 2024.
The campaign seeks to intensify the efforts of the Department in eradicating poverty and enabling food security through the Township Agriculture Programme.
Approximately 15 households adopted Township Agriculture in the area, with over 200 community members further requesting to be part of this programme.
MEC Zuma noted that it is encouraging to see individuals in the community joining forces with the Department to combat poverty.
"After observing that township residents are reluctant about agriculture at their homes due to lack of land, as a Department we are saying that Township residents should utilize the available land, regardless of its magnitude.
As a Department, we will support communities with all the agricultural necessities required, we will fight to ensure that no one gets left behind and that nutritious food is affordable and available to our people, noting that we are challenged on this front by inflation in food costs," said MEC Zuma.
