Communal Herd Genetic Improvement Programme

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Hon. Super Zuma on Tuesday, 22 August 2023, handed over six (6) Brahman bulls to communal livestock farmers in Bethania Sports Ground, Port Shepstone, under UGu District.

This intends to bridge the gap between commercial farmers and emerging livestock farmers while also increasing red meat production in the province.

Honorable MEC Zuma said "it is important for farmers to ensure that their livestock is always in good health so that they can make a good profit from it and make it easier for the livestock to be sold."

The Hon. MEC also fenced a livestock grazing camp in the area to ensure that the livestock herds are in a good health state and ready for auctions and the ever-demanding market.

In response to widespread food insecurity, the Department also gave farmers farming implements, fertilizer, seedlings and mechanization services for tractors, ploughing and discing tools.

MEC Super Zuma went on further to interact with the community members, to create awareness about Departmental programmes and to further understand some of the challenges faced by these communities at the service delivery level.
