As part of the accelerated efforts to boost and augment efforts geared towards food security, KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Friday 3 July 2020 visited the Wembezi area under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality to hand over seeds, implements, garden tools and trees to impoverished households as part of the relaunch of One Home One Garden programme.

The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet mandated all the MECs to visit their respective districts under Operation Sukuma Sakhe to relaunch of government’s key programmes which acts as a buffer against poverty.

About 1 200 households are set to benefit from the programme in uThukela District and each of the three local municipalities will have 400 households that have been apportioned as beneficiaries.

“Food security that works and benefits all of us should always top our priorities. We must never drop the ball. We understand that most of the households lack space to plant and we urge that communities, churches, businesses and even municipalities must allocate some small portions of land to assist with vegetable gardens. This is an urgent priority as we continue to battle the incursion of Covid-19,” said Dube-Ncube.
